About Charles

Charles Miller was Principal Bassoon in the Ulster Orchestra for 30 years and has been repairing all types of woodwind (and some brass) instruments since 1981.

Charles now lives in Thirsk, Yorkshire with his family, two dogs, and cat, after making the move from Holywood, Northern Ireland.

Tools and Methods

The comprehensively equipped workshop includes:

  • A Magnahelic gauge for leak detection on flutes, clarinets, oboes and bassoons. This incredibly sensitive instrument will pinpoint any elusive leak quickly.
  • For saxophones, a Cat Systems leak light - to check seating of pads.
  • Charles also uses a Myford lathe for reconstruction of broken tenons etc.
